Grading Policy

Graded A.png   Students are assessed daily through use of formal and informal assessments.

Please review each paper in your child's Wednesday folder to check their progress and read suggestions from me.

We assess formally at the beginning of the year, at mid-year, and at the end of the year. Students will be given the PALS - Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening in October, in February, and in May.  This screening assesses letter and sound knowledge, rhyme awareness, and beginning sound awareness.  We will also use the VKRP.

The Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) is an initiative focused on building a more comprehensive understanding of school readiness and success. As an assessment system, VKRP adds measures of mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills to complement Virginia's statewide assessment of literacy skills using the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS, www.pals.virginia.edu). Data from the assessments are beneficial for a wide range of stakeholders including state policy makers, division and school leaderseducators, and families to support young students' learning during the kindergarten school year and beyond.  We will begin this testing in early September.

You will see a check, star, or some other form of checking symbol on classroom assignments that are being used to check your child's progress toward mastering a standard.  You will also receive interim reports every 4 weeks.

You will see the numbers 1-4 on your student's report card which will be used to determine understanding or mastery of a standard:

4 - Above Proficient of Standard
3 - Proficient of Standard
2 - Below Proficient of Standard
1 - Insufficient Evidence of Standard
