Hello and welcome to second grade!  Please feel free look over this website and/or contact me at [email protected] or call the school at 434-384-2881 during office hours.

Our Resource classes are from 12:15-12:55 on the following days:

Monday - P.E. (Children MUST wear tennis shoes)
Tuesday - Music & Library Checkout
Wednesday - P.E.
Thursday - Computer
Friday - Art

One healthy snack and water to drink:  Around 9:30 a.m.

Water bottles with "pop up" tops are acceptable.  No screw-on tops because they tend to spill and make a mess.  As you can imagine, it is very frustrating for students when someone spills water on their work.

Morning Recess 10:00-10:15  (Shoes with rubber soles are strongly advised.)
Lunch 10:54 - 11:24    (BUT Early Dismissal lunch time is from 10:39-11:09)
Afternoon Recess will be offered as determined by school policy.

I will give a homework pass to any parents and/or grandparents who come to our PTA events.

Our first PTA event will be held on Friday, August 18th at 7:00 p.m.  I encourage you to come out and join us for games on the field followed by a movie on the blacktop.  It is a lot of fun!

PTA Open House night will be held on Thursday, September 22nd.   I hope to see you there!

INCLEMENT WEATHER NOTICE:  The Superkids reading program is based on a 5-day cycle.  The children are scheduled to take tests in reading, language, and spelling every fifth day.  If Bedford County Schools are closed because of bad weather, we will reschedule/postpone tests for the same number of days.  For instance, if we are closed for two days, I will reschedule the test for two days later.

Computer usernames and passwords are sent home at the beginning of the year.  Please contact me if you need an additional copy for your child to practice at home.
IXL.com:  You can always complete extra practice for Language Arts and Math skills we have already worked on in IXL (All 2nd grade sections).  If your child is struggling, please feel free to work on 1st grade skills in order to gain confidence and/or fill-in gaps.

MobyMax.com:  Your child can do this at home for extra practice in math, reading, and/or grammar. This website is designed to practice skills that meet the specific needs of your child.

Sumdog.com:  This is an excellent website for math practice.  The kids love this because they can play against each other as well as other children across the nation!  Competitions are often held to obtain prizes.

Raz-Kids.com:  This is a great website for reading practice.  The children can earn points, and they love to see the rocket go up!  You will need the teacher's username in order to do this at home, but it is given at the beginning of the year.

Accelerated Reader (AR):  Second grade students are required to complete 1 hour of reading each week and record the information on a nightly Reading Log.

AR points are to be completed as follows:

October 13, 2017 - 7 points needed
December 20, 2017 - 15 points needed
March 15, 2018 - 25 points needed
May 18, 2018 - 35 points needed

Correct & Return policy:  I encourage children to CORRECT & RETURN all classwork and homework papers for two reasons:  (1)  I want to make sure they understand "why" something was marked wrong; and (2)  I want them to be more careful when they complete assignments by proof-reading and checking over their work before turning it in.  It is important to develop a habit of doing their best work the first time it is given.  Tests can be CORRECTED & RETURNED, and I will adjust the grades as a reward for "learning from their mistakes" (with the exception of spelling tests).
