Boonsboro Elementary School provides gifted services to students who have been identified as gifted in Reading, Language, and Mathematics. Students meet several times a week with the Gifted Education Resource Teacher and work independently and with their classroom teachers on advanced and extension activities.
In Reading, students participate in above grade level novel studies with their classroom teachers. Projects for each novel engage students in higher level thinking skills, the use of multiple intelligences, and creativity development. Social Studies topics are often tied in to Reading and Writing projects.
In Mathematics, students are pre-tested in order to compact, accelerate, and/or extend the curriculum. Problem solving skills are practiced and developed through the use of Continental Math League, enrichment units and activities, and science related projects.
A very important aspect of Gifted Education is that it requires that students take responsibility for their own learning. They must be organized and able to work independently. Not only will these skills positively impact their ability to work on and do well on special projects in Elementary School, but these skills will pave the way for future success in the upper grades and in the workplace.
The world is changing and it’s changing fast. We really can’t imagine the knowledge and skills our children will need as adults. We can, however, be sure that if students can find and understand new information, think deeply and creatively about it, and use a variety of problem solving techniques with it, that they will be well poised for future success.
